11, and I went into the modeling business.  At least I thought he was in it.  But I was hooked.  For the next 20 years, I built radio control models every waking moment unless some other project took my attention, as the photos show.  I learned to fly moderately well, but I became an expert builder.  My interest in flying was in determining how well my latest model would fly and whether my modifications made it fly better or not.

Modeling provides so many skills working with wood, electronic systems, engines, and control systems.  Much of what I needed in the restoration of a full-size aircraft was learned at the modeling bench.  It all started with radio control.
